PME specalise in Spacedrive High Level Driving Controls, we have been assisting disabled drivers get back on the road for over 30 years.
The majority of vehicles we modify with Spacedrive driving controls are fully accessible from the wheelchair allowing the driver to remain in their wheelchair whilst secured in the driving position.
This is achieved by fully lowering the floor of the selected van, which is required for the driver to be seated at the correct height for vision out of the windscreen. An automatic docking station and ADR compliant head rest are fitted to secure you safely in the driving position.
Depending on your access to parking either a side or rear access ramp can be fitted, there are various seating combinations available depending on how many passengers you wish to carry. In most cases we are able to retain a minimum of 5 seating position inside the van including the wheelchair. If you are planning on driving from your wheelchair we strongly recommend the VW Multivan for its driving performance, reliability and adaptability.
For those that can access a vehicle normally but experience a degree of hand impairment, some passenger vehicles can be modified with Spacedrive steering modifications.
Similar to above, hybrid systems are also available for those that may have enough residual strength to steer a vehicle using the conventional steering wheel, lightened steering and a suitable steering aid but not enough strength to apply sufifcent force to the brakes using a conventional hand control. In this circumstance a Spacedrive Gas/Brake lever or 2-way joystick can be utilised to apply throttle and brakes.
We have also modified agricultural/recreational vehicles for drivers wanting to get back into the workforce or just fun on the farm.
Despite the complexity of some of these modifications it is a requirement that all vehicles remain operable by an able-bodied driver. This is possible with fold/slide away controls, tracking mounted seats and some clever engineering!
