Learning how to drive using a modified vehicle can be tricky, whether you have never driven before or are a very experienced driver.
We work with driving instructors that understand disability.
Access to a variety of the latest driving controls for instruction gives you the best opportunity to choose the modification that you are most comfortable using. We have modified vehicles with up to seven different driving configurations to suit a wide variety of disabilities. All driving instructors that teach students with a disability are required to complete a course that familiarises them with different disabilities and driving controls.
Your occupational therapist usually works along with the driving instructor to observe and determine a driving control that is best suited to your disability. Depending on the type of modification and the license that you hold you will be required to complete a set number of driving lessons. To obtain the license endorsements for that driving control you may also be required to sit an on-road driving test (depending on your state)
For drivers that have complex requirements our Evaluator vehicle can be used for driving assessment. This is performed on road and you will be accompanied by a SPACEDRIVE accredited driving instructor. For your assurance the driving instructors’ dual control can take full control of the vehicle at any time. This include steering, brakes and accelerator which is unique to the industry for disability driver training vehicles.
We also work closely with the driver training industry providing dual control modifications to driving instructor vehicles. Of which more and more are branching out into the disability sector.
Call us to discuss your requirements and we can put you in touch a driving instructor to suit your disability.
